Bald Head Island is a village located on the east side of the Cape Fear River. Compared to the city of Wilmington to the north, the village of Bald Head Island is small and somewhat remote. It is only accessible by ferry from the nearby town of Southport. There are no cars on the island; instead, residents drive modified electric golf carts. The village is revered for its picturesque nature and is a popular location for retirement. "Old Baldy", its out-of-service lighthouse, is the oldest still standing in the state, built in 1817.
Cape Fear is a prominent headland jutting into the Atlantic Ocean from Bald Head Island. It is largely formed of barrier beaches and the silty outwash of the Cape Fear River as it drains the southeast coast of North Carolina through an estuary south of Wilmington. Cape Fear is formed by the intersection of two sweeping arcs of shifting, low-lying beach, the result of longshore currents which also form the treacherous, shifting Frying Pan Shoals, part of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
Whether you like big adventure, or just beautiful sightseeing, boating, golfing, biking, beach combing, or just visiting lighthouses, antique shops, playhouses, museums and galleries, North Carolina is rich with attractions and amusements. One of the most exhilarating beach vaction spots on the East Coast is NC'S Outer Banks. Vacation rentals from Corolla down past Kitty Hawk and Nags Head and all the way to the former pirate stronghold of Ocracoke Island. You have to do this at least once in your lifetime. If mountains are more your style then the North Carolina Smoky Mountains offer a value family vacation with hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and scenic drives through the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forest. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers many outstanding mountain views and scenic overlooks. You can't go wrong on this one!
