Tarboro (the county seat of Edgecombe County) is located in the northeast central area of North Carolina. It is on Highway 64 east-west, and 16 miles east of Interstate 95 north-south. Travel time to Raleigh, the State Capital is less than one hour. Travel time to Atlantic Ocean beaches is just over 2 hours. At the center of the town's Historic District, the 15-acre Town Common is the second oldest legislated town common in the US and the only remaining original common on the east coast, outside of Boston. This historic public park, famous for its tall oaks, tree canopy, and war memorials has stood the test of time; however, in recent years, the Common has suffered major damage from several strong storms and hurricanes.
Located a short drive from Interstate 95, Edgecombe County uses Highway 64 to offer residents a short drive to the coastal beaches in the East, and a short drive to the Triangle where you'll find the state's capital city of Raleigh. Local industries have discovered both a quick access to rail and our proximity to major ports in Wilmington, Morehead City and neighboring Norfolk, Virginia. Edgecombe County's location offers a mild year 'round climate with four distinct seasons. After a brief winter snowfall or two, we know that it won't be long until the Dogwoods begin to bloom. After a few days of hot sunbathing days in summer, we know that the local maple trees will soon begin to show the brilliant colors of fall.
